This addition and remodel to an existing house proposed many interesting challenges. First, the lot
is an unusual shape, and therefore needed an unusual footprint.
Next, there was the freeway butting up against the side of the property
and the noise pollution that it causes. The solution to the noise
was a large sloping roof which acts as a sound wave deflector.
Finally, there was the problem of the existing house overheating during
the summer. This problem was solved with new insulation, new
double paned glass windows, shading devices, and new windows to help
with both cross ventilation, and stack ventilation.
The specifications for building materials
called for all earth friendly products. However, due to time and
budget constraints, many of the green products that were called for
were no longer an option. The house is still very green in many
other ways. All appliances are to be energy conserving.
Photo voltaic panels are to be installed after construction is
complete. Recylcled materials were used whenever possible.
Most importantly, the building was designed to never require air
conditioning or heating. This project is about 75% complete, and
should be finished by spring.
